Cookie Policy

Last updated: 14 October 2026

This Cookie Policy explains how CleanTech Journal (“we”, “us” or “our”), operating at cleantechjournal.com, uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit our website.

Please read this policy together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use and protect your personal data in line with the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your browser or device when you visit it. They are sent back to that website, or to a third-party service that recognises them, on later visits.

Cookies help websites work properly, remember your preferences, keep secure areas safe, understand how content is read, and support advertising.

Cookies can be:

  • Session cookies, which are deleted when you close your browser; or
  • Persistent cookies, which stay on your device until they expire or you delete them.

Some cookies are set by the website you are visiting (first-party cookies), and others by external services that appear on the page (third-party cookies).

2. Cookies We Use

We use a limited set of cookies to run our news platform, understand how our journalism is read, and display advertising that helps keep our content free to access. They fall into the following categories.

2.1 Essential Cookies

These cookies are needed for the website to work securely. They cannot be switched off in our systems.

  • Editor and administrator login: a secure cookie (payload-token) that keeps our editors and staff signed in to the content management system. It is only set for people who log in to the admin area, not for readers.
  • Draft preview: cookies such as __prerender_bypass that let our editors preview unpublished articles before they go live. These are only set for logged-in staff.

Our newsletter, webinar and contact forms do not need cookies to work. Information you submit through them is handled as described in our Privacy Policy.

2.2 Analytics Cookies

Analytics cookies help us understand how readers use our website: which articles are read most, how visitors find us, and how pages perform. This helps us improve our coverage and the site itself.

  • Google Analytics: we use Google Analytics, which sets cookies such as _ga and _ga_* to distinguish visitors and measure how the site is used. We use this information in aggregated form to understand readership trends, not to identify individual readers.

2.3 Advertising Cookies

To support our independent clean-energy journalism and keep it freely available, we display advertisements through Google AdSense.

  • Google AdSense: Google and its advertising partners may use cookies such as __gads, __gpi, IDE and DSID to show advertisements based on your visits to our website and other websites, limit how often you see the same ad, and measure how ads perform.

3. Third-Party Cookies

Some cookies on our website are set by third parties. These providers may collect information about your visits to our website and other websites, in line with their own policies. They include:

  • Google LLC, for Google Analytics and Google AdSense; and
  • LinkedIn and X, if you use our social media links or sharing buttons. These platforms may set cookies on their own websites according to their privacy policies.

We do not control cookies set by third parties. Please review their privacy and cookie policies for details of how they use your data.

4. How to Control Cookies

You can choose whether to accept cookies, and you can change your choice at any time.

4.1 Browser Settings

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies, accept only first-party cookies, or warn you before a cookie is stored. For example:

  • Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies
  • Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Apple Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Microsoft Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data

If you block essential cookies, some parts of the website may not work as intended.

4.2 Opting Out of Google Analytics

You can stop Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits to any website by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

4.3 Opting Out of Personalised Advertising

You can turn off personalised ads from Google in your Google Ads Settings: https://adssettings.google.com

You can also opt out of personalised advertising from many participating companies through:

Opting out does not stop advertisements from appearing. It means the ads you see will be less tailored to your interests.

5. Our Privacy Policy

Any personal data collected through cookies is handled in line with our Privacy Policy, available at https://cleantechjournal.com/privacy-policy/

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time, for example when we add new features or when the law changes. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it was last revised.
