State-run energy major GAIL (India) Limited has approved an investment of ₹3,800 crore to develop 700 megawatts of solar power capacity across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, as part of its strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
The largest share of the investment will go toward a 600 MW solar project at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi. The project will be integrated with a 550 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system to ensure a stable and continuous power supply for GAIL’s petrochemical facility in Pata, located in Auraiya district.
In Maharashtra, the company will develop an additional 100 MW solar project in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, supported by a 22 MWh battery storage system. This facility is intended to meet the captive energy requirements of its PDH-PP plant in Raigad, highlighting a growing trend of industrial units shifting toward dedicated renewable energy sources.
The addition of battery storage systems is expected to enhance reliability and address intermittency challenges associated with solar generation, enabling round-the-clock energy availability for critical operations.
Once commissioned, GAIL’s total renewable energy capacity is expected to exceed 1,000 MW, up from the current 147 MW. The expansion aligns with the company’s broader net-zero ambitions and reflects increasing adoption of solar-plus-storage solutions across India’s industrial sector.
The development comes alongside GAIL’s efforts to strengthen its overall energy infrastructure, including recent steps to enhance its LNG logistics capabilities, indicating a dual focus on clean energy transition and supply chain resilience.
