More than 40 lakh households across India are now benefiting from rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, marking a significant milestone in the country’s distributed renewable energy journey. The scheme, launched in February 2024, aims to bring rooftop solar to one crore homes by March 2027.
The adoption rate has accelerated sharply, with over one lakh households joining the program every eight days during May 2026. Gujarat leads the country with 6.8 lakh rooftop solar installations, followed by Maharashtra with 6 lakh and Uttar Pradesh with 5.6 lakh installations.
India’s total installed solar capacity currently stands at approximately 154 GW, of which rooftop solar contributes 11.8 GW. More than 32 lakh rooftop solar systems have already been installed nationwide, helping households reduce electricity costs while supporting the country’s clean energy transition.
Under the scheme, households installing a 3 kW rooftop solar system can receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month. The central government provides subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system, while several states offer additional financial incentives. So far, subsidy disbursements under the program have exceeded ₹22,600 crore.
The scheme also enables consumers to earn income through net metering by exporting surplus electricity to the grid, transforming residential rooftops into decentralized power-generation assets. With a target of one crore solar-powered homes by 2027, the initiative continues to play a key role in expanding India’s rooftop solar ecosystem and strengthening energy independence.
